  • What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for:

    • Individuals aged 65 and older (most individuals).
    • Clients who have received Social Security Disability (SSDI) for more than 24 months.
    • Clients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
    • Clients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), also known as permanent kidney failure.

  • What are the different parts of Medicare?

Medicare is divided into several parts:

    Part A: Hospital Insurance

    Part B: Medical Insurance

    Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans

    Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

  • What does Medicare Part A cover?

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.

  • What does Medicare Part B cover?

Covers outpatient medical services like doctor visits, lab work, and some preventive services.

  • What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part C, is a medical care plan that private insurance companies can offer and is approved by Medicare. This plan is an alternative to Original Medicare and provides additional benefits for vision, dental, and prescription drugs.

  • Do I need Medicare Part D?

Since Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage, this can be beneficial for individuals who take prescription medications. If a client does not have other creditable prescription drug coverage, he or she may want to consider enrolling in a Part D plan to avoid late enrollment penalties.

  • When can I enroll in Medicare?

During your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts 3 months before your 65th birthday and lasts for seven months. There are other enrollment periods including the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) and Special Enrollment Periods (SEP). These can be applied depending on circumstances.

  • Can I switch Medicare plans?

Yes. Clients can switch Medicare plans every year during certain enrollment periods including the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7 each year. Clients may also be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) under certain circumstances.

  • How can I find the right Medicare plan for me?

It depends on the client’s healthcare needs and preferences.
